John said, "Nancy the ISO was fine at 400. The F-stop was good at being 4.5 and wide open, this should blur the background and give you as fast a shutter speed as you should have needed. I do not think your shutter speed was 1/1500 because you would not see any motion in the birds wings. 1/2000 will just about stop a bullet in flight. When I said "A" that is for the A on the selector button on the top of the camera. A stands for Aperture or F-stop. M = manual and S = shutter speed being the controlling factor. If you would look back at some of my pictures you will see the pictures of humming birds at F 4.5 and shutter speed at 1/1200, and I stopped the action of the wings. And you know how fast the humming birds wings are going."
I re-checked the EXIF data on the picture, and it did say "1/1500 second", so unless it really means 1/15 as opposed to 1/1500. What do you think? I'd like to know as I want to continually improve what I do! Thanks for your input, John! I appreciate careful evaluation and suggestions so I can hone my craft, such as it is! ~ Nancy

Thanks for the good advice, John on my dove-in-flight photo. My F-Stop was 4.5, as wide open as it gets, but my ISO was at 400; my shutterspeed was 1/1500. The only thing I can really do is jump up the ISO, I think. I don't know what an "A setting" is, though. Can you explain it to me if you have a chance? I'll be out of pocket for the next 12 or so days after today, so if I don't respond, please know that will be why! Thanks! ~ Nancy

Yes, John -- I know. This headshot won't win any prizes, totally out of focus, just for starters. I'll be getting a new one soon. This'll have to do for now.
